To boost her chances Anna's sport mentors assign her to a secret "medical program" where she's getting doped with anabolic steroids. Her racing times duly improve, but after she collapses during training she starts asking questions about the drugs. Anna decides to continue her training without the steroids - not telling her mentors. Her mother is worried that she won't meet the required time and might not qualify for the Olympics, which she sees as a chance for her daughter to escape from behind the Iron Curtain.
